Starring James Stewart and Donna Reed, this classic holiday movie was produced in 1946 to tell the timeless story of George, a man who’s made an often subtle but always meaningful influence on the lives of his friends and his community. With the help of his guardian angel, George learns what life would have been like if he never existed. Foundation Trustee Charlotte Guglielmi, MA, BSN, RN, CNOR, FAORN, is neither George nor the angel, she is a long-time advocate for the influence the AORN Foundation has on the perioperative nursing community. Char, chair of its Nominating Committee and a past president of AORN, Inc., sees the reach and influence the Foundation has on the professional advancement of perioperative nurses and practice research, and understands that the Foundation impacts the lives of nurses, surgical patients, and their families. “I remember the meeting of the House of Delegates when the members voted to establish a Foundation,” says Char. “Certainly, practice has changed tremendously in those 30 years, but our passion for good stewardship remains strong and I want to see more members come forward to experience how trusteeship can be a fascinating and rewarding experience.” Char and the other members of the Board want to see more nurses included among the Trustees. “It takes time, talent, and treasure to make surgery safe. Our Trustees use time to align individual perspective and expertise,” says Char. “And we need the talent of nurses’ knowledge and experience to make the decisions to keep surgery safe.” As for treasure, Char says the level of giving is up to the individual. “All three arms — time, talent, and treasure — make it possible for nurses to participate and make a difference.” Become a Trustee The Nomination Committee accepts application interest for perioperative nurses to join the Foundation Board of Trustees year-round. Terms of service vary and can be discussed when you speak with a representative. If you have an interest in learning more about serving as a Trustee, please send an email to Foundation Director Colette Palmer with this information. The Nomination Committee will be reviewing letters of interest in 2023. Foundation scholarship awardees advance their education and professional standing Josh Wymer of San Diego, California and Julie Hubner of West Olive, Michigan are perioperative nurses who have some important things in common. They have both committed to advancing their education and, today, with scholarship assistance from the AORN Foundation, Julie is proud to have added DNP to her credentials and Josh is just one course away from earning his DNP. Julie's story Since 2019 when she received her first scholarship, Julie has continued reporting on her progress to tell us how the Foundation’s support enabled her to earn her BSN with honors through an RN to BSN program at Grand Valley State University. She let us know that she proudly listed the AORN Foundation scholarship in her graduation recognition ceremony program because she hoped by doing so, she could make more nurses aware of what AORN has to offer and encourage more graduates to go into surgical nursing. Julie continues to work as a surgical circulator in ambulatory surgery in Grand Haven, Michigan. And in her most recent note, she said, “AORN’s scholarship assistance, website, and educational tools have generously helped me with my academic pursuits as well as strengthening my practice skills as a surgical circulator.” Josh's story When Josh learned he was awarded the AORN Foundation Staff Scholarship, he wrote to say he felt honored, and he pledged to “pay it forward as he continued his personal and professional journey.” Josh’s scholarship is helping fund the fifth semester of a six-term course of study in the Doctor of Nursing Practice – Executive Leadership program at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. His work includes exploring the impact of increased rates of nursing specialty certification on 1) nursing care alignment to best practice and the latest evidence, 2) quality of patient care, 3) patient safety and health outcomes, and 4) organizational standing in the community. Josh wrote, “I was elated to be informed of this generous award, and these funds will help reduce my student loan burden while enhancing my focus on current course work. Most importantly, your generosity is also allowing me to put valuable time back into my family, work, and community.” Foundation Scholarships and Grants The AORN Foundation supports its members’ professional goals and has awarded scholarships to more than 3,000 nurses working to earn a degree, achieve advanced certification, and complete continuing nurse education. The Foundation is now accepting applications for Professional Certification Grants for CNOR, CSSM and CNAMB certification until Feb. 5, and beginning Jan. 3, scholarship applications for the 2023-2024 school terms will be accepted. » Email Anne Kochevar for more information Check Out Upcoming AORN Events See what conferences and webinars are coming up.It's a Wonderful Life
